Treadings [Jul. 11th, 2009|08:07 pm]

kaylyssa
I saw my friend Megan get married today. I said hi to her dad on the way in. She had a cute new haircut and wore a flower in her hair instead of a veil. The ceremony was in our chapel at school, which has big high windows. Afterward I sat awkwardly on a step until Megan's sister's boyfriend came and chatted with me. Then Megan came out and I ran and hugged her. I left after that because I have lots of schoolwork this weekend (2 exams). She and her husband have moved in together near me and I like collecting married couples for when I'm married. Hopefully we can hang out more, we haven't seen much of each other since Freshman year. I love my 2 school friends.

I should go back to my studies. I am reading about organizational conflict. Last week we somehow delved into deconstructionism and the post-structuralists. This textbook has no pictures. Every 100 pages it will have a single boring blue and white chart. I will take an exam on it after I finish my readings tonight.

I tried to rent all the inner city/black/L.A. movies I could think of on Netflix, because a while ago Brandon and I watched Don't Be a Menace and thought it was hilarious. It inspired us to rent all the movies it parodies. Tonight is Boyz in the Hood and South Central is on its way. Any other recommendations?

I broke 1 glass and bon bon broke 1 bowl this past week, and so far I have pulled 2 shards of glass out of the bottom of my foot. It is so satisfying to coax out the shiny sliver from the thick sole skin. I told Brandon and he winced. Am I such an anomaly in the pleasure I get from picking at myself?

I've been reading The Vegan Sourcebook before bed. I can't tell whether it makes me feel exhausted or pumped. Somehow both. I've been trying to stay positive and love the world but it's hard when everyone sucks and the world is ending. I try to tell myself, the world is not ending, we will save ourselves, you will die before the worst of it, but I only hope it I don't believe it.

career update [Jul. 10th, 2009|11:28 pm]

staticsexa
after two months and two interviews (the last of which was with the entire departmen & i nailed it), i finally found out that i did NOT get the job at discovery place. mega-bummer.

however, the same day i got that news I finally spoke on the phone with someone from the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art, which is opening here next spring. i accepted an internship with them doing a graphic design project and then whatever other things they have for me to do. it's unpaid though, of course. this is my fourth unpaid internship :'[ i'm sad no one can pay me for all of the great things i can do. plus the lady told me their plans for hiring which are extremely limited and it doesnt sound like they plan to offer any positions for someone like me. i mean unless i want to just work in the museum shop :'[

but i really feel like if i hang around there enough, they'll realize how valuable i am and offer me a job at some point. right now i just want to help out in any way that i can and see where it goes.

after talking with the lady at the Bechtler about my career goals, she recommended a graduate certificate program at UNCC to me. it's a certificate in nonprofit management. i applied today, hopefully i'll be accepted. if i want to turn it into a masters degree later, all of the credits could be applied towards that, too. also, all of the classes are at night in case i do manage to land myself a full-time day job.

as for now though i applied to be a cashier at target :'[

god damn this economy

other than that i hit the library and got a haircut. this weekend will be a weekend of non-excitement compared to last weekend, and that's fine with me.
i may go into Atlanta for some bikey thing tomorrow.

Toe Twins [Jul. 10th, 2009|04:06 pm]

kaylyssa
Ugh! Birthday had to be muzzled at the vet. He also expressed his anal glands like a skunk. He still stinks a little. What a baddie. I'm starting to think the emergency vet we went to made some poor decisions. Today he got a piece of his paw pad cut off. First they jabbed him with a local anesthetic, which is when he started snarling and snapping like a wild thing. I remembered last summer when I cut my toe open and had to get 5 stitches. They jabbed that anesthetic into me and I cried. It felt like thousands of bee stings. I knew that was what Birthday was feeling so I didn't blame him for snarling. Still, it was exhausting and I was shaking as we left. Now he has a bandage plus another special bandage with NO CHEW all over it like caution tape. I still have his cone hat on though. STILL no walks until next TUESDAY. I want this thing to heal up so we can go on our walks! I didn't realize how much I myself like the walks. I feel fat. I cannot stop saying "I'm all feeyat" in a stupid voice. I don't know why.

Anyway I'm going to walk to the grocery store to try to get some sunlight even though it's cloudy. I will buy soymilk and make tea and do homework for a couple hours.

I didn't get any sleep last night and bd's appointment was early. I'm off kilter now. Tomorrow I'm going to a wedding at school! Brandon and I might have come across an ideal moving in together situation but more on that later hopefully. I gotta clean. I'll never clean!

[Current Mood | confused]

I dunno about this place where I am getting my eyeballs worked on. Everything about their process so far has been strange. They told me that what they were going to do was order a contact lens that had the same prescription as the one that just broke a month ago...the same prescription my previous eye doc came up with, and we would work with the prescription on the glasses that work in conjunction with the contact to get things tightened up. My eye is bad enough that I use a contact AND glasses for the same eye, so it sounded okay to me. But I can't help but wonder why they didn't even try to see if they could have made the contact lens differently. Maybe my eye has changed or disintegrated even more since the last exam...almost 5 years ago. I think they are copping out of giving the best treatment they can because I don't have insurance.
Yesterday my contact came in, so I went by to make an appointment for the next phase, which is to retake the eye exam with the contact in, and they ended up letting me pay for and take the new contact with me, without ever asking me to try it out at all. I duno man, this place is just a little weird. I'm going to follow through with my next appointment, and maybe go ahead and get my next glasses made there, but I think I will be going back to my old eye doc in the future. I always walk out of this new place feeling unsure of what happened.

Kaylyssa Ughes [Jul. 7th, 2009|06:43 pm]

I had 2 nights where I couldn't sleep. Birthday cut his paw pad on a mystery July 3. That night he was up crying on weird drugs all night and I "slept" (couldn't) on the couch in front of his crate to comfort him. Sunday night I drank 2 cups of coffee to help me complete some h.w. assignments and was tossing and turning in bed until well past 4a.m. I've been drinking tea lately so one cup of coffee is equal to approximately 40 crack rocks to me now. Then last night, I conk out at 12:30 and don't wake up until 2, minus 20 minutes to take Birthday to the doctor. Beed is doing fine. He never even noticed he was hurt.

I'm in the poorhouse again though. Can't wait til I go back to tutoring in the fall and have some extra bones tumblin in my pockets. These are things I would buy if I had the money: a haircut, pants, a pink streak in my hair, hand weights. I think that's it. A trip to the zoo? Oh and DVDs of the Office and more Seinfeld. THEN I would be happy. But only then.

Just kidding. On July 4 I wore American flag pants and baked a vegan American flag cake. See?

I can see the end of the road in my classes which makes me happy. Brandon and I went to the 1.50 movies last night to see Wolverine. I liked it! There were lots of people from Lost in it. I still hate Charlie's annoying face. We had watched Hulk (with Ed Norton) in it from redbox recently and I liked that better. Thought it was good. Ed Norton is sexier than Hugh Jackman although the costumes in Wolverine were extremely rad. Noticeably rad.

zzzing's Mojitomelon salad with cucumber and raspberry [Jul. 5th, 2009|01:51 am]

zzzing
[Tags|, ]

I am the best chef in the world There is no debating this... it is a fact. I'm amazing.
And so, keeping with my awesomeness, here is some rad shizz of my own creation:
(unfortunately, I didn't have a camera handy, so I couldn't take pictures, but trust me... it was beautiful on top of being delicious)

you will need:
One watermelon
A metric assload of fresh mint leaves
Some limes
Raspberries
Cucumbers
Honey
Lettuce
Pernod (or White Run if you're a Pernod-hating jerk)

Fresh mint leaves are probably the greatest thing of all time. If you don't have all of these ingredients, then go cook some shitty hot dogs or microwave a goddamn hot pocket, because this shit is the real deal. Follow the directions or die in a fire. This is a work of art and I expect it to be treated as such.

Here we go:
Cut the watermelon into wedges or slices or however you want them. I like them without the rinds because fuck rinds, right? Drain off some of the water in the melons by putting them on a strainer or a rack or a napkin or something like that for a bit. it won't take long.

Heat up the grill to "nice and hot", then slather some honey on the watermelons; not too much, but don't be queer about it either. Grill the honey-covered watermelon slices for about a minute on each side, maybe more, just judge by the color of the honey. Meanwhile, slice up some cucumbers and salt them down pretty liberally; then set up a bed made of a few lettuce bits and salty cucumber slices... when the watermelons are done grilling, put them on top of the lettuce/cucumber slices.

Get a bowl ready. Chop up a ton of mint leaves nice and fine, add them to the bowl; then scrape off some lime zest and add that to the bowl too. Then add some lime juice. Don't go overboard though because it'll fuck up the taste of the mint, just add enough so that the whole thing is slightly moist, not a limeliquid-mess. Then you just put some raspberries in the bowl and you're ready to scoop out a few spoonfuls onto each of the watermelon slices.

Finally, sprinkle a tad tiny bit of Pernod on top of the whole thing. Pernod is an acquired taste for awesome people only, so if you're a stupid jerk who doesn't like Pernod, then use white rum instead. But for real, DON'T USE A LOT of either one. Trust me on this one, I've fucked it up with too much alcohol and it totally destroys the whole thing. Just a teeny few drops on each slice/pile o goods and it's freaking perfect.

Enjoy, and gleefully whisper my name every time you orgasm from eating this masterpiece.

Came up to greenville early, will crash at Espos. Up later than expected, but I kind of expected that. They put a soundbwoy to work and said "hook up the audio", so I did, partially. Then I didn't play a single tune. My crate folder is limited, so I will wait til the appropriate time.
The court has diagonal grass stripe business going on. The prizes this year are also looking nice...champagne in tiki buckets. Wacko prizes for the last place team.
There was Wii action (for money) but now it will be power sleep time. Live updates all day tomorrow on facebungle.

bocce tourney prep [Jul. 3rd, 2009|10:20 am]

[Current Location |pre-game warm up]
[Current Mood | cheerful]

Every 4th of July, Eric "the ladies love"  Esposito hosts his annual bocce tourney. my record is pretty good...2007 style points winner, 2nd place overall 2008, and I was def overall winner one of the early years but I don't remember which actual year. There is a cash prize, and beer lunch and Frogmore Stew dinner are included in the entry fee.

One year beer got spilled on my laptop, which fucking sucked. I brought the lappy to play tunes. There is background music playing during the tourney, which we all take turns playing, and it is always like a contest within a contest, to see who comes with the most wicked tunes. When I say wicked tunes, I mean nothing close to dancefloor fare...at the tourney it is all old school soul and funk, and a zillion tons of dub. I wasn't going to take any music this year, but Espo asked me to bring some, so now I have to go up there armed with a million ton bomb file folder of sickness. I know he has some gems to drop, so its on. It's funny because when I play up there is is less like djing and more like creating a playlist in real time, since I am not beat matching. Lazy drunkard style fits the atmosphere just fine. It's always loose and sloppy like your girlfriend's....transmission.

I figure I should go ahead and start the booze portion today. There is a BMX demo in Buford at 5pm, so I'll aim to be suitably beer enhanced by that point.

For now though, I have to fire up Cubase and boost thye volume level on this copy of Shinehead covering Billie Jean, which will no doubt be the hands down tune of the weekend.

College Times [Jul. 1st, 2009|02:38 pm]

kaylyssa
They're making a Creative Writing major at my school starting this fall. I'm kind of glad it wasn't there when I started, because I would have done it. I like being an English major, it sounds more serious. Now I am English and Communications, too. I actually only have 1 more writing class to take, I think, to finish out my writing track for the English major, and I am super glad. Writing classes get me to produce a lot, sure, but I really hate them. They are extremely uncomfortable. I enjoyed Poetry last semester but wouldn't do it again. I'd rather read books and write about them and do my own writing on my own time. I wonder what News-writing will be like in the fall. I heard it's awful.

Well I just thought I'd update everyone on this news. It's breaking news. Other Queens updates: this fall we will have a cafeteria like normal college cafeterias, instead of a terrifying elementary school-style buffet and giant circles of grandparental dining-room tables in a hall. So I may be able to eat at school! More than diet soda and a bag of chips, anyway.

I'm going to miss college so much when I graduate. I wish there was something I wanted to go to grad school for. Maybe I'll be a doctor just to stay in school. Ugh but I couldn't be a doctor because they make you dissect cats! And cow eyeballs! I would cry. I also couldn't be a veterinarian for this reason. After college I just have to write stuff and send it away, that's what I have to do, how horrible.

Why yes, I am procrastinating this schooling which I love so much

America [Jul. 1st, 2009|01:27 pm]

Today I want to go to Indian Trail and swim in a pool with my friends. Instead I gotta write another paper. I think I will write it on affirmative action. They were talking about it on NPR. On our walk today, I found a slightly dented soccer ball in someone's curb trash. I extracted it and Birthday flipped his shit. He wanted to carry it home but we still had most of our walk to go so I carried it for him. He loves soccer balls passionately. He is chewing on it as we speak. We kicked it in the yard a little but it's hot.

Brandon and I have been going to Carowinds a lot! We keep picking the perfect time to go where we stand in line for 10 minutes and ride whatever rides we want. We love to people-watch especially commenting on people's tattoos. I sprayed us down with sunblock before we left. I've stopped smoking and I'm suddenly afraid of cancer. I refuse to smoke even one cigarette and I put on sunblock all the time. I bought an expensive sporty spray kind. Spf 30.

This weekend is my favorite holiday July 4. There's a cookout and then we'll find somewhere good to watch fireworks. I don't care about anything but the pants I will wear. I suspect my pants are from 1976, America's 200th anniversary. I hope I am alive in 2076. Is that too much to ask?

I'd better get started on some of this work, if I hurry I can break for a swim! I wish I had a lake and Birthday would swim with me in it from one side to the other and back. I want to go to Canada to my aunt in law's lake house. The lakes here are nothing like that.
